The 12-inch Uconnect touchscreen system is a defining feature of the fifth-generation Ram 1500, which debuted in the 2019 model year. This unit combines the radio, navigation, and climate controls into a single, impressive bezel. While the screen was available from 2019 to 2022, there was a significant software update during this period.

Design and Integration

The 12-inch Uconnect system is a portrait-oriented display that serves as the command center for the truck's infotainment and climate functions. The assembly consists of three main parts:

  1. The Touchscreen: The high-definition 12-inch display itself.

  2. The Bezel: The surrounding trim piece that includes physical buttons. These redundant controls for essential functions like volume, tuning, and core climate settings (temperature, fan speed) allow for quick adjustments without relying solely on the screen.

  3. The Radio Module: The main computer for the system, which is housed behind the screen.

For replacement or sale, these components are typically treated as a single, integrated unit. A key feature is the ability to run two applications simultaneously via a split-screen view, such as navigation on the top half and audio controls on the bottom.

System Evolution: Uconnect 4 vs. Uconnect 5

2019-2021: Uconnect 4C NAV

For the first three years of the new generation, the Ram 1500 was equipped with the highly-regarded Uconnect 4C NAV system.

  • Navigation: Came standard with built-in Navigation featuring pinch-and-zoom maps.

  • Smartphone Integration: Included wired Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™.

  • Connectivity: Featured SiriusXM® with 360L, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot, and access to Ram Connect services.

2022: The Upgrade to Uconnect 5

The 2022 model year introduced the next-generation Uconnect 5 system. While it used the same 12-inch screen and bezel, the underlying software and hardware were significantly faster and more capable.

  • Wireless Connectivity: The flagship feature was the introduction of wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, allowing for seamless phone integration without a cable.

  • Enhanced Performance: Uconnect 5 boasts faster processing speeds, resulting in quicker boot-up times and a more responsive interface.

  • New Features: Added an Alexa "In-Vehicle" Assistant, dual-phone connectivity, and Over-the-Air (OTA) update capabilities for maps and system software.

Trim Level Availability

The 12-inch screen was a premium feature, primarily found on higher trim levels.

  • 2019-2021: The 12-inch screen came standard on the top-tier Limited trim. It was a prominent and popular option on the Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, and Rebel trims.

  • 2022: With a slight shift in packaging, the 12-inch screen became standard on both the Limited and Laramie trims. It remained a widely available option on the Big Horn, Rebel, and Limited Longhorn models.

Important Notes for Swapping/Replacement

  • Interchangeability: While the units may look identical, a Uconnect 5 system (2022) is not a direct plug-and-play replacement for a Uconnect 4 system (2019-2021) without additional hardware and potential programming.

  • Configuration: When buying a used unit, ensure it is from a vehicle with a similar feature set. These radios are configured to the original vehicle's VIN and options (like surround-view cameras or specific audio systems), and may require dealer programming to enable all features in a new vehicle.
